Attention: Pittsburgh/Latin American Community

Dear Community Member:

The Center for Latin American Studies (CLAS) is pleased to announce that this year we will be cosponsoring THE 26TH LATIN AMERICAN & CARIBBEAN FESTIVAL with the Latin American Cultural Union (LACU). As in the past, we would like to invite you to participate in this event.

The Festival will be held as part of International Week on Saturday, October

1, 2005 in the William Pitt Union, 3959 Fifth Avenue, University of Pittsburgh s Oakland Campus, from 2:00 p.m. - 12:00 a.m.

The Festival will highlight the diverse cultures of Latin America and the Caribbean through food, art, crafts, music and dance. In the past you have generously offered to participate either as a performer, food or craft vendor, or as an information provider. I once again invite you to do so.

To help make the day unique, the watercolors of Peruvian Artist Victor Beltran will be exhibited in the Kimble Gallery, WPU, beginning the day of the Festival and continuing for two weeks (October 1 14, 2005).

This year s event will accommodate six (6) food venders and twelve to fourteen (12-14) craft and information venders. Over the years the number of craft booths has decreased. If you know of craft vendors who would be interested in joining us, please pass the word along or send me their names and addresses. I will invite them to participate.

The day will begin at 2:00 p.m. with food, art exhibit, crafts, children activities, and information booths in the Ballroom and Kurtzman room while music and dance performances take place in the Assembly room. To end the day we welcome everyone to dance to the sounds of Latin American rhythms from 9:00 p.m. to midnight.

The following information is provided to assist you in preparing for the
festival:

1. There is a $25 charge for craft booths and a $50 charge for food booths due with the application. Please make checks payable to the University of Pittsburgh. This fee will be used to defray Festival costs.

2. Booths will be assigned on a first-come, first-serve basis with a limit of six (6) food booths and twelve-fourteen (12-14) art/craft/information booths.

3. Note that the schedule for food, crafts and information booths is from 2:00 p.m. 9:00 p.m.

Food booths are required to use chafing dishes or other heating trays to keep food warm. No microwave ovens or roasting pans are permitted. No exceptions can be made. This prevents power outages and eliminates the expense of electrical rewiring of the room.

4. We ask that food be reasonably priced so that students can afford to try all of the delectable cuisine of Latin America and the Caribbean.

Application Instructions:

Please complete and return an application form for Food, Craft, and Information Booths and/or one as a Performer. If you are having a booth and

performing please fill out a separate application for each. A check made payable to the University of Pittsburgh must accompany your application.
Applications must be sent by regular mail. We cannot accept registrations by telephone, fax, or email. Send the application and check to Ms. Luz Amanada Villada, Center for Latin American Studies, University of Pittsburgh, 4205 Posvar Hall, Pittsburgh, PA 15260.
