Hi everyone!  I would like to schedule a day to clean up the LACU office and make it more "user-friendly." Date for clean-up:  Saturday, July 22, 2006. Time: 9 a.m. to noon. I think that between some of us, we can go through all the stuff in the basement, and clean up the office space.  Please let me know if you can help out.  I think this might be a nice opportunity to see some of those board members and friends that we haven't seen in several months. Cleaning up our office and making it more presentable will benefit all of us.  Thank you, and again let me know if you can help out for a few hours. Address: 235 Atwood St. Oakland, (1 block off Forbes Ave. and Atwood St). Erika Wirkkala, LACU President. erika_wirkkala@yahoo.com

WIth this year's GALA fast approaching, as I have done in the past two GALAs, I would like to offer to create a one of a kind allegory style painting for LACU.  This work of art can be offered as an auction piece, program cover, or any multiple ways you believe this image would best benefit LACU.  I believe an outstanding piece should convey the ideas and inspirations  directly from the LACU community conveying how you believe the Latin community is positively represented in Pittsburgh.  Please take the time to email me and share your ideas and feedback.  I want this to be an interactive piece representing the true inspirational spirit of LACU!!!  I am honored and excited to create an original work of art for LACU!!!!!! Some questions for the community.... 1) What subject matter reflects Latino today, progressively moving forward while connecting to their roots?...... 2) What excites you about the Latino culture in Pittsburgh?..... My name is Ben Muessig, I’m an editorial intern at the Pittsburgh Tribune Review. I’m working on a piece about Latin American immigration to Pittsburgh, focusing particularly on the neighborhood of Beechview and its growing Mexican-American population. I’d love to set up an interview with anyone at the LACU organization who is interested in the subject.

I’m interested in finding out why Pittsburgh has a slower rate of immigration than many comparable cities? What about Pittsburgh appeals to immigrants, what about Pittsburgh makes immigration challenging? Will Latin American immigration reach Pittsburgh at the same rates as the rest of the country? What could the city do to make the city more appealing for immigrants?

I can be reached by phone or e-mail. Thanks so much for your time. Ben Muessig. bmuessig@tribweb.com - Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.
